A driver who passed their car driving test after 1st January 1997, and does not have D1 entitlement, may legally drive a minibus if they:
· are over 21
· have 2 years' driving experience
· do not get paid* other than out-of-pocket expenses
· don't tow a trailer
· and drive a minibus not exceeding 3,500kg Gross Vehicle Weight (or 4,250 if accessible) displaying a S.19 Permit
How to check the weight of a minibus
(VIN) Plate and may be found under the bonnet, in the step-well or on the doorframe of the minibus.
The vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight is always the second highest figure – in this case 4100kg. Practically, this means that under the above terms, this minibus may not be driven by a driver who passed their car-driving test after 1st January 1997 unless the bus is adapted to carry passengers with disabilities i.e. has a passenger lift or ramp fitted.
You must also check that your minibus insurance policy allows drivers without D1 to drive your minibus. Please check this with your insurance company.
